Warren Turnbull, FEC., P.ENG.
West Central Regional Councillor
MY PLATFORM
I am in my fourth year as your incumbent West Central Regional Councillor and seeking my third term in this role. I would be honoured if you permit me to represent our region for one more two-year term.
The primary role or mandate of PEO is to regulate the Practice of Professional Engineering and to govern its members so that the public interest is served and protected. We do this by ensuring all professional engineers have met the qualifications for licensing and that only properly qualified individuals practise engineering or lead others to believe they are qualified to practise. To fulfill our primary role, we are authorized under the act to establish standards of knowledge and skill; maintain standards of practice for the profession; develop standards of professional ethics; and promote public awareness of its role.
The most important issue facing PEO today is to ensure that we remain relevant as a regulator and can continue to govern our members in the public interest. In order to achieve this, I believe we must:
1. Refocus the organization on our primary mandate of regulation of the Profession to serve and protect the public.
2. Support the outside audit currently underway to ensure that our processes and procedures are in line with the best regulatory practices in the world.
3. Implement the Public Information Campaign (PIC) already developed by the PIC Task Force, to convince graduates of the value of becoming a P.Eng. and industry and government leaders of the value Professional Engineers can bring to their operations. That is we are beneficial not a burden.
4. Immediately begin working to find ways to keep up with licensing graduates of the ever-increasing numbers of emerging disciplines.
5. Ensure that our processes, such as licensing are as up-to-date and transparent as possible and are meeting reasonable targets for efficient and timely completion. Once processes have been streamlined take them online.
6. Continue to ensure that our practicing members remain current through strengthening of the PEAK program and/or other tools.
7. Strengthen our enforcement resources and engage chapters to assist in this as well as in other regulatory activities so that non-professionals practicing or companies calling non-professionals, engineers are stopped from doing so. If we strengthen this area of our activities the value of the license will be increased.
8. Once we have refocused our efforts on our primary mandate of regulation and cut unnecessary activities and programs, then if essential, implement a long overdue fee increase (10 years without one) to ensure we have enough financial resources.
I am the incumbent with experience, open to new ideas, consultative, retired and therefore available, friendly and approachable, a strong leader, innovative and young at heart.
Please support me with YOUR VOTE for one more term as the West Central Regional Councillor, but even if you don’t plan to vote for me at least vote. It is a simple, quick process to vote online. Your vote is important and as your regulator the governance of PEO continues to be very important. Without the right leadership PEO could flounder. Make sure we don’t. PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE.
